Background

The Bad News
Mary started having strange symptoms: numbness in the hands and feet, headaches, etc. in mid March, and went through a lot of testing for all kinds of things: Meningitis, Tumors, multiple sclerosis and all sorts of not good stuff. We've all been very worried.

The Good News

The medical folks think they have it figured out: Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS). Check out the links at the bottom of this page for more information.

While it's not something to be taken lightly, it is a relief to have a diagnosis, and it's something that we all know Mary can conquer. It's mostly a waiting game now, and there is no telling if it'll be tomorrow, or in 2 months that the problems will go away. Because we all know that Mary is pretty darn tough, our bet is on the former, but we also want to be there for her in case it's the latter.

We're hoping that this web site can keep all of Mary and Jason's friends up on the latest.

We will be posting news updates on her status in the area below periodically. You can leave a message for Mary or Jason on the message board to the right ... she'd love to hear from folks, and regrets not being able to take calls or visitors.

I'm back and had a great time reading, swimming, eating, napping, and walking the beach. Since I've been home I have noticed an intensifying of many of my original symptoms, and the return of some others, but still no more paralysis, thank God. I am hoping this is typical of "recovery"- two steps forward, one step back, and not a sign of relapse. I am still so much better than I was a few weeks ago- the headaches are quite tolerable now, and I am fully functioning in the "slow lane". Dr. appt. on Mon. to assess. At the risk of sounding greedy now, I still would love your prayers. Please pray that I would not lose sight of God's plan in my life, nor give in to discouragement or panic. I've decided that recovery is harder in some ways than the initial illness, and have much empathy for people with chronic diseases of any type. This is teaching me so much. My love to all of you, dear family and friends. I am so blessed to have you all in my life!!!

We've all been thinking about you and praying for your speedy recovery. We miss your sweet smile, and the kids miss your yelling at hockey practice! Say hello to Josh, and don't get hooked on that hospital food.
